GUIDES TO ACT #1
The Challenges of Climate Change in the Mediterranean
The Mediterranean is one of the “hotspots” of our planet and the consequences of climate change will be stronger there than elsewhere. From the Paris Agreement in December 2015 to the 22nd Conference of the Parties (CoP22) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Marrakech in November 2016, the Mediterranean area is at the heart of the international climate agenda on the climate.
The response to these global challenges is also reflected at the regional level, through the Mediterranean Climate Conferences. Morocco hosted in Tangier on 18 and 19 July 2016, the MedCOP Climate, the second Mediterranean Climate Forum in the wake of the MedCOP 21 which took place in 2015 in Marseille.
These events reaffirm that the reduction at source of greenhouse gas emissions as well as the adaptation needs of the riparian countries are carried by many actors within the perimeter of the Mediterranean area.
As part of the preparation of the MedCOP Climate Tangier 2016 Regional Forum, an initial document was produced in July 2016 by ENERGIES 2050 and its partners. This report, prepared as part of the preparation of COP 22, provides an update on the Mediterranean facing climate challenges, in light of its specificities and realities.
Without pretending to any exhaustiveness, this document gives an overview of the challenges but also the dynamics in progress and the various opportunities for action in this vulnerable space. It also testifies to the tremendous opportunities to act, subject to the setting up of a real multi-player dynamic, collaborative and unifying.
It calls for the pooling of resources in order to be part of a transition that carries low carbon development, resilience and a necessary solidarity here and elsewhere in the service of a Mediterranean soothed and creative future.
This document is intended as a contribution to the debate to initiate prospects for the collective future while confronting visions and commitments with the reality of the imperative of implementation, its monitoring and measurement, notification and Verification activities in the context of the fight against climate change.
