ENERGIES 2050 is involved in the co-creation and development of FEDECOM solutions, representing the concerns of end users and energy producer-consumers (prosumers). It also coordinates FEDECOM’s communication and dissemination activities.
Global problem
Around 45% of renewable energy production in the European Union is expected to come from citizens’ initiatives by 2050. At the heart of Europe’s energy transition, energy communities are a promising way for citizens to engage, own and manage energy resources collectively or in collaboration with other stakeholders (energy suppliers, technology providers, private or public companies or local authorities). A distinction is made between Citizen Energy Communities (CECs) and Renewable Energy Communities (RECs).

These last can combine several types of energy and constitute a decentralized, low-carbon energy production model, ensuring equitable access to energy and redefining the local management of production and consumption, thus responding to the challenge of energy transition: energy sobriety, energy efficiency and renewable energy production.
FEDECOM is a 4-year research project that aims to federate energy communities, enabling them to exchange energy, even across national borders. The project brings together 17 partners and 3 associated partners from 7 European countries.
FEDECOM aims to develop a flexible, scalable, cloud-based blockchain platform to manage multiple energy communities, increasing their reach by enabling not only production, but also exchange and storage of excess energy available at any given time within and between different communities. This innovative platform will offer analysis, modelling, forecasting and optimization services to help plan, monitor, store and control these dynamic energy production systems.
The development of this platform is being demonstrated in 3 large-scale pilots in Spain, Switzerland and Benelux (Belgium and the Netherlands), including all stakeholders: energy technology and service providers, grid operators, public stakeholders and users from the residential, industrial and tertiary sectors. Each pilot presents the potential for sectoral coupling of the platform with the different energy vectors and makes it possible to design, implement and evaluate the FEDECOM solution which will be a world first.
Each pilot takes into account a range of technologies and uses. The Spanish pilot focuses on green hydrogen, the Swiss on hydroelectricity and the Benelux pilot on storage and electric mobility. FEDECOM will thus help to increase the integration of renewable energies in the energy mix, while contributing to energy savings, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and grid congestion problems. FEDECOM will also contribute reducing the cost of energy for consumers by generating more income for prosumers “producer-consumers” of energy.
