Born from the fusion of the words ethic and carbon, ethiCarbon® is ENERGIES 2050’s citizen-led initiative that links everyone’s climate responsibility to sustainable, solidarity-based projects.
Launched in 2011 as a pioneer of an inclusive and transparent approach, it continues today to give citizens, communities, and businesses the means to understand, reduce, and offset their emissions while supporting concrete actions on the ground.

2011
Since its launch, ethiCarbon has raised awareness and engaged citizens, businesses, local authorities, and associations in reducing and offsetting their carbon emissions. Solidarity projects with strong social, economic, and environmental impacts have been funded in countries most vulnerable to climate change. Today, as the initiative reinvents itself, we are updating our figures and indicators to fully reflect this story and the new actions underway. Very soon, we will share here the key data that illustrates the scope of this collective mobilization.
The initiative
ethiCarbon was not born out of a trend, but out of a conviction: for climate action to be truly meaningful, it must be fair, inclusive, and rooted in the reality of local territories.
At the time, most initiatives focused on reducing emissions and monetizing those reductions on the carbon market. ethiCarbon chose a different path: to prioritise projects led by vulnerable communities, especially those focused on adaptation and strengthening the resilience of territories and populations.
From 2011, the initiative offered an innovative calculator developed by the ENERGIES 2050 team, one that did not simply measure emissions. It provided a complete journey: understand your impact, reduce it, and then offset what remains by funding projects that deliver lasting transformation. Each project, selected with great care, had to meet strict criteria for transparency, local relevance, and social, economic, and environmental benefits.
ethiCarbon also stands out for its ethical approach to carbon pricing, not tied to volatile market rates, but to the social and environmental dividends of the projects it supports. By linking international solidarity, responsible carbon finance, and citizen participation, it has built a bridge between individual action and collective impact.
Today, this vision continues in a renewed form, integrating the best available tools while preserving what makes it unique: total transparency and uncompromising commitment to projects that truly make a difference.

now more than ever
From its launch in 2011, ethiCarbon broke the mould.
At a time when most carbon initiatives focused on simply reducing emissions or selling standardised credits, it chose a different path: placing people, justice and transparency at the heart of climate action, with a focus on small-scale projects with very high human value.
In 2015, an African branch was created: ethiCarbon-Africa in partnership with the African Biofuels and Renewable Energy Company (SABER-ABREC) in Lomé and AERA The Climate Finance Group, bringing climate action even closer to the realities of vulnerable territories.
In 2019, the initiative expanded worldwide, maintaining its approach of setting an ethical carbon price deliberately higher than market rates to support complex projects with high social, environmental and economic added value.
Since 2022, the rise of free and efficient carbon calculators has opened a new era. Instead of reinventing what already exists and constantly updating its own tool, ethiCarbon has entered a strategic redesign phase:
– Relying on the most reliable free tools available to everyone.
– Preserving its unique DNA: an ethical carbon price and solidarity projects selected with the highest standards.
Because while technology evolves, one thing does not change: the climate emergency demands solutions that are fair, inclusive, and capable of truly transforming the lives of the most vulnerable communities.

In 2025, ethiCarbon enters a new chapter in its history.
After more than a decade of raising awareness, calculating, offsetting, and funding projects in the world’s most climate-vulnerable countries, the initiative is evolving to remain a relevant and impactful citizen-driven tool.
From now on, it will rely on the most reliable free carbon calculators available, allowing it to focus its efforts where they matter most: selecting, supporting, and funding projects with strong human and environmental value.
This shift makes it possible to reach more people, act faster, and ensure that every contribution goes directly to concrete actions on the ground.
ethiCarbon is more than just a compensation mechanism: it is a catalyst for climate solidarity, connecting every individual action to lasting collective transformation.
And tomorrow, this mission will continue to grow, driven by strong partnerships, committed contributors, and an unwavering vision: to make the carbon price a lever for justice and hope for the planet.
