La Francophonie is more than ever conscious that “the future of the francophone world is in the hands of our youth”. A key challenge remains ensuring that future generations adopt new sustainable patterns of consumption and production, for climate, biodiversity and the environment, of course, but also for the economy, employment, culture, etc.

The Francophonie has made recommendations and commitments in this regard at the last Summits of La Francophonie, the World Forum of the French Language of Quebec and the International Forum on Youth and Green Jobs in Niamey (2012).

A first step was taken in Nice during the 7th edition of the Jeux de la Francophonie. Youth took up the challenge by participating in the very first “Ecological Creation” contest. Twenty Francophone creators (or groups) presented concrete initiatives for sustainable development.

Stéphane POUFFARY, CEO of ENERGIES 2050, sat alongside four other international personalities on the jury of the competition of ecological creation.

The event, entitled “Innovative products in energy conservation, renewable energy or sustainable management of natural resources”, consisted of the creation of a product to save money on the use or sustainable development of natural resources ( water, energy, genetic resources, forests, etc.) and reduce environmental impact and social well-being.

Round table

“Modes of sustainable consumption and production: challenges and prospects for Francophone youth”

Stéphane Pouffary, Managing Director of ENERGIES 2050, and member of the competition jury, spoke on the theme of “Energy Transition and Sustainable Consumption and Production Modes: Turning Challenges into Action Opportunities”.

The round table was followed by a series of questions and answers, which allowed for a deeper discussion, notably on the role of La Francophonie, in terms of consumption patterns and sustainable production, and the impact youth, as well as on international debates and decision-making processes.

The games of la Francophonie

The Jeux de la Francophonie, open to all 77 member and observer states and governments of the Organization Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF), reflect the solidarity and sharing within the Francophone community.

As a sporting and cultural event, the Jeux de la Francophonie represent a crossroads of exchanges between French-speaking countries and bringing together French-speaking states and governments. They are the concrete expression of solidarity and cooperation, the founding principles of La Francophonie. They take place alternately in a country of the South and the North and offer the participants the opportunity to discover lifestyles often far from their own culture, almost all the international competitions taking place in the affluent countries. The International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF)
With over 270 million francophones worldwide, nearly 60% of whom are young people, the mission of the Organization internationale de la Francophonie is to give substance to active solidarity among the 77 states and governments that comprise it – more than one-third States of the United Nations. Its objective is to contribute to improving the lives of populations, helping them to become the actors of their own development. The International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF) works with respect for the diversity of cultures and for the service of peace, democracy, education and sustainable development (access to the OIF website)

La Francophonie games: a sustainable development project

The Games of La Francophonie are organized by the International Committee of the Games of La Francophonie and the National Committee of the Games of La Francophonie under the aegis of the Organization internationale de la Francophonie.
A unique example of international solidarity, the Jeux de la Francophonie fosters national unity by leaving a legacy to the youth of the organizing country. When organized in a developing country, they create the opportunity to:
• better structure the national federations with the support of the international federations which integrate the organization of the Games into their development program;
• achieve synergies in cultural networks;
• to equip the elite, but also for the majority;
• enable the country to acquire know-how that can be used for other national and international objectives;
And • ensure that people identify with the event.
